Guardando su internet ho trovato questo programma fantastico che permette avere l'interfaccia web di gmail direttamente sul desktop..
ma in più si possono gestire allegati come foto in maniera straordinaria..

sono compatibile al 50%, nel senso che se vuoi comporre un messaggio, da google notifier puoi indirizzarti su mailplane, ma per il momento non ho trovato la stessa opzione per leggere i messaggi.
quindi usando Google Notifier, se ti arriva la notifica della nuova email e ci clicchi sopra, ti reindirizza al browser web. Aprendo manualmente Mailplane c'è quindi una sovrapposizione di funzioni, compare infatti la notifica del programma stesso.
Cercavo di capire se la stessa cosa che fa Gmai con il Notifier la faccia anche Mailplane anche quando il programma è chiuso.
A quel punto potrei abbandonare serenamente Google Notiifier.

devi sempre tenere il programma in background
