Have spoken once again with someone linked to the product team at Konami and the news is both good and bad...

Bad news first: the patch is taking considerably longer than they expected. (Bear in mind that this is Konami's first Live venture) Worst case scenario at the moment is 2-3 weeks. Unfortunately, there is an 'even-worse' case scenario' due to the former religious holiday known as Xmas.

Microsoft slam their doors shut for their holi-bobs on the 17th of December and - once the Konami Live team finish the patch - Bill's boys will require some time to test and upload it. And there is always the possibility that the patch won't work!

At this point in time Konami are trying (very hard) to get it sorted for the 15th; which will leave Microsoft just 2 days to test and upload the patch to the Live network! If this doesn't work out - the patch will be released ASAP, but that will be in the New Year.

The good news is good but undoubtedly overshadowed by the bad. The Konami Live team are taking in to account many of the complaints levelled at their service: lag issues, lack of manual player change, mini-leagues, etc. And are developing a patch that tackles "...most of the issues raised by consumers."

This seems to be the best option for the company as most of their developers are ensconced in Japan. Undoubtedly their continued work on PES4 Live is proving to be a time-consuming and expensive business. Perhaps understandably they are keen to get it done and out of the way, leaving themselves free to engage new projects.

So there it is, not great is it? When I asked if there was a press release forthcoming I was told that they would produce one but not everyone would report it. I have to say that is the single most spurious reason for not producing a press release that I have ever heard.

My suspicion is that they don't want to attract attention to their ongoing problems with a flagship product and it's much vaunted Live implementation. All things considered though Xbox has a better offline version of PES4 than the PS2 and the ability to play online; albeit temporarily marred by some irritating Live issues.

It's still a brilliant football simulation, and it's on Xbox. Despite our toys being mostly out of the pram right now I'm sure most of us would rather own the game now rather than wait until the New Year for a version with perfect Live service.

We're just going to have to wait a little longer for it to peak and reach it's brilliant best. Beyond any doubt, If Xbox Pro Evo 4 was a footballer, Alex Ferguson would be on the phone to his agent..."
